What Else To Do With A Foley Food Mill???

See this simple kitchen tool? Well, back when I posted about peeling 100 baby apples in order to make applesauce, a few of you recommended that I invest in a food mill like this. Much to my surprise, my sweet mother-in-law brought this to me when she came for Spiderman's birthday.

It is a Foley Food Mill. Exactly what I need to make applesauce in the future. This is actually a hand-me-down from my husband's late Grandma Anne. I have very wonderful memories of visiting her home. She made every effort to see that her guests were always comfortable AND well-fed, a character trait I aspire to...

But here's my question... what else can I do with this food mill? Do any of you use something like this? What kitchen adventures can I have with this tool? What all can I make? Any suggestions?

Well, it might seem kinda obvious and you already know, but many people use them to make homemade baby food. Cook some fruit or veggies, put it through the mill and then freeze the extra in ice cube trays. :)

My mom uses it when canning tomatoes and when she makes tomato juice.

Made your granola bars for the first time today but haven't had a chance to try them yet. Can't wait!

no suggestions...although that post did inspire me to look for a food mill as well...all to no avail, but I did invest in a hand blender like the one you used....and I've used it many times and LOT IT! how did I live without it?
oh...I do have a food mill suggestion....I saw a roasted (or baked) tomato sauce recipe on tv that suggested using a food mill...lemme know if you want details.

They're great for mashing potatoes to make gnocchi.

My mom has one exactly like that - I remember it well!

In addition to applesauce, Mom always made tomato sauce with it. I could never be in the house when she canned tomato sauce. I couldn't stand the smell. But now it brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.

Have fun with your food mill! I'm so jealous. Maybe I can talk Mom into giving me hers, although I'm sure she still uses it from time to time.

We have a different type of food mill, but we, too, use it for applesauce and for processing tomatoes. One more thing we've used it for is to extract grape juice for making jelly.

I use mine for garden fresh spaghetti sauce. I chunk the onions, garlic, and tomatoes and throw in whole herbs, cook it down, and run it through the food mill.

It's also great for pureeing pumpkin.

I remember my mom using that for making tomato sauce and ketchup. I also remember her using it to make applesauce...pink applesauce was my favorite!
